Listening to music can help boost the immune system’s ability to fight diseases. Researchers have found that dance music, in particular, can help improve the body’s line of defense against disease-causing bacteria and viruses.
Dance Music Boosts Body’s Antibody And Stress Hormone Levels
In a study conducted by researchers from the Max Planck Institute and Sussex University, researchers found that the antibody levels of volunteers increased after listening to just 50 minutes of uplifting dance music.
Antibodies are used by the body’s immune system to neutralize pathogens such as viruses and bacteria known to cause diseases. People who make low levels of antibodies tend to develop repeated infections.
The researchers also found that the level of stress hormone that can weaken the body’s immune system dropped after volunteers were exposed to the music.
The researchers asked 300 people to listen to 50 minutes of either happy dance music or a random collection of tones and found that the levels of the stress hormone cortisol significantly decreased in participants who listened to the dance music compared with those in the control group.
Cortisol may provide the necessary energy needed when a person is under stressful conditions. It can help an individual fight or flee a stressor but long term elevated cortisol levels can have damaging effects to the body and these include high blood sugar, hypertension, cravings for carbohydrate, metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes.
The levels of the antibody immunoglobin A, the first line of defense of our body’s immune system, also increased after participants listened to joyful dance tunes.
Different Types Of Music Have Different Stress-Reducing Effects
Neurocognition expert Dr. Ronny Enk explained that the pleasant state that music can induce results in physiological changes that eventually reduces stress and provides direct immune system enhancement.
He added that the stress-reducing effect appears to vary for different types of music. The study, for instance, involved joyful dance tunes from different centuries.
