The Comeback of Boy Bands

Music Band, DJ, EntertainmentThe word is out. Boy bands are making a comeback. Just in time for the Labor Day Weekend, throw your own “Boy Band Celebration.” We know their names: New Kids on the Block, the Jonas Brothers, One Direction, and the list goes on. However, if you think back, one of the most popular bands of all times was a boy band. John, Paul, George, and Ringo were the ultimate boy band that swept the UK and the US in the 1960s. Those moptop haircuts are iconic now, but when they made their debut, they were considered long. Their black suits, white shirts, and skinny ties started the British Invasion.

Two other boy bands created music history as well: the Jackson 5 and the Osmond Brothers. Before Michael Jackson was the king of pop, he was one of the Five. Their tunes soft-rocked us through the 1970s and their awesome Afros and psychedelic colored costumes were the ultimate in 70s cool. They were “Dancing Machines.” The Osmond Brothers were a different kind of boy band. Sometimes there were four, sometimes five, and sometimes six brothers singing together. Their matching outfits and harmonious voices made tween girls all over the world sigh.

In the 80s, 90s, and into the “aughts”, new boy bands kept coming.  The New Kids On the Block, Boyz II Men, Menudo, Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC, the Jonas Brothers, New Edition, and One Direction, to name more than a few. The bands we loved turned out some great soloists as well: Justin Timberlake, Nick Jonas, Ricky Martin, and Omarion. And, even though they were star soloists before some of these guys were born, Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney are icons of the music industry who endure decade after decade.

For the last few years, music magazines including Beat, Vulture.com, Rolling Stone, and even Forbes have hailed the return of boy bands. Beat named the groups “In Real Life,” “New Hope Club,” “Pretty Much,” “Road Trip,” and “Why Don’t We” as the boys to watch.
