Movie Quotes We Get Wrong

We’ve all heard these quotes from our favorite movie and TV programs; but time tends to simplify things, and famous quotes are no exception.

Here are some of the most familiar movie/TV derived sayings people keep getting wrong:

1.“BEAM ME UP SCOTTY!” This phrase is, of course, derived from the 1960’s space epic “Star Trek”, referring to the device that apparently allows people to be “transported” instantly from one place to another. The phrase is now often used sarcastically, but we still get it wrong. The actual phrase used was: “Beam me aboard”; with or without “Scotty”.

2. “I DON’T THINK WE’RE IN KANSAS ANYMORE, TOTO.” Dorothy’s famous “Well, DUH!” moment has been altered over time. Dorothy’s actual statement was more analytical: “Toto, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.”

3. “ELEMENTARY, MY DEAR WATSON.” That famous, well used phrase seems so typically “Sherlockian” that it’s almost a crime to state that, in all of Arthur Conan Doyle’s writings, Sherlock Holmes never once made that statement! He did come close however; Holmes says “Elementary” in “The Crooked Man”, and “It was very superficial, my dear Watson, I assure you” in ‘The “Cardboard Box”. He also says “Exactly, my dear Watson” in three different stories. “Elementary, my dear Watson” was first used by P. G. Wodehouse in 1915.

4.”PLAY IT AGAIN SAM”. Who could forget Humphrey Bogart’s poignant request in “Casablanca”? Apparently lots of us, since what he actually did say was: “Play it once Sam, for old times’ sake. Play ‘As Time Goes By’.”

5. “MIRROR, MIRROR ON THE WALL, WHO’S THE FAIREST ONE OF ALL?” is what the Evil Queen chants in “Snow White”; except she doesn’t. What she really says is: “Magic Mirror on the Wall, Who’s the Fairest One of All?”
