How to Organize a Fundraiser

Fundraisers are an excellent way to raise money for worthy causes. A fundraiser cans be as simple as a carwash to raise money for a school or neighborhood project, or a charity event with professional entertainment and well known dignitaries performing and giving speeches.

The purpose is to raise money, not spend it; so recruit volunteers to donate their time and talents. Consider the target group that you want to participate,  and target potential sponsors,  and then “sell” the event with a well rehearsed “pitch”.

Choose your target group. Depending on the project you are organizing for, this may be children in school, their parents, local businesses, or the general public. You may want to sell candy or donuts to the children, but advertising or services to businesses, and a car wash or a talent show for the general public. By picking the best possible “product” for your fundraising effort, you will increase your chances of success.

Pick a suitable time and date. Car washes, cookouts, and yard sales require good weather, so they may not be suitable for winter or hot summer days.  Events get more “traffic” on weekends, but make sure other events aren’t going on at the same time that will affect attendance at your event.

Find a good location. Retail businesses often allow different groups to use their premises for car washes, bake sales, and other fundraising activities, as it also draws potential customers to their business as well. Be sure to explain your project and ensure that no damage is done to your sponsor’s property.

Advertise. Place signs and post notices at community bulletin boards, spread the news by word of mouth. Many radio stations and local television outlets have community bulletin boards and public service announcements for nonprofit groups.
